Nicholas Turner The mystery of my endlessly reducing number of socks - I have searched the washing machine for some sort of portal into a parallel universe or sophisticated sock stealing gang's lair, but not yet discovered anything...
Nicholas Turner Hobbiton for a pint with the hobbits, ideally at a big fireworks-filled event...
Nicholas Turner In my case, perhaps predictably, I find that running can help unplug the block. As it’s not my day job, I don’t fret too much if I hit a vacuum of ideas and normally try and turn my attention elsewhere and let the writing return of its own accord.
Nicholas Turner Expressing and sharing ideas and hopefully spreading a bit of enjoyment and even providing inspiration...
Nicholas Turner I recommend keeping a contemporaneous note of any inspiration/ideas, which can arrive at the most unexpected times. I sometimes send myself a quick email/text with any such flashes, whether it’s when I’m out and about or in bed in the middle of the night. I also think that it is worthwhile writing down ideas which may not relate directly to the project at hand. If the ideas of flowing, go with it and it may just lead the current project in a different direction or be the genesis of a new project.
Nicholas Turner For the time being, I am keeping a blog of my running post the first 101 marathons – an “Epiblog” if you will. I have no immediate plans for a sequel, or any other book, but who knows?
Nicholas Turner I have always loved being creative. Sadly, I decided long ago on a career as a lawyer which allows for almost zero creativity (despite various marketing campaigns about “innovative” law firms). Writing (and drawing to a lesser extent) has been an outlet where I can satisfy some of my creative urges outside the confines of the legal straightjacket I wear most of the time…
Nicholas Turner Given that the book is essentially a memoir of a specific part of my life – running 101 marathons – the idea stemmed from that. However, I did not seriously contemplate turning the stories into a book until sometime around marathon number 50. Fortunately, I had recorded a number of the early marathons in various blogs and personal records so was able to remind myself of some of what had transpired and did not have too many gaps to fill. I have read a number of inspirational books about running. Mine probably isn’t that, which is why I thought that it may appeal to a different type of audience to typical running books.
