It's a toss-up between Lord of the Rings, where I would hike from The Shire to Rivendell (and back again), and Dune, where I would try and ride a worm!

This year I read A Canticle for Leibowitz, a classic 20th-century sci-fi novel. I also read some Kameron Hurley (The Stars are Legion) and a historical novel on the Battle of New Orleans, focused on Andrew Jackson.

Write every day. Set aside 15-20 minutes and write. It doesn't need to be perfect or ever published, but you need to work on your craft daily. I try to sit down and write as soon my kids are out the door to school, and before I look at any kind of social media or to-do list for the day. As you write more and more, you'll find your voice, you'll find your style, and you'll grow your writing muscles.

Take a break and don't beat yourself up. There are some times when you need to push through it and unlock a new level of determined creativity. But at other times, writer's block is just another name for creative fatigue. In that case, take a rest, go on a vacation, restore your soul. Then come back to it.
