I think the idea has always been there, but I hadn't previously had the time nor (full disclosure) the inclination to write it. Once my wife convinced me to write, everything felt like it took on life quickly. I had the most difficulty figuring out the theme to make it work for me. Using the series as a framework, I really wanted to start with material that will be in the third book (or later), but in order to do that, in my own mind, I needed to have the background in place and a world created where it could all happen. As a result, I started Book 1 with Cooper, the main character, at age 9(ish) and it's a Coming of Age theme. Your opinion may vary but for me, it works.

As a new (aspiring) writer, I guess I've been fortunate. I've yet to feel 'blocked'. There have been some challenging spots, sure, but I think it's just a matter of putting your ideas on the page. Just have the concept in your mind of how your story goes and just write for a couple hours. The story is there, or you wouldn't be writing. Don't read it. Don't edit. Don't even look for typos. Just write. Once you look up and wonder where the last few (several) hours went, put it away. Look at it again tomorrow; then edit.

Find something you love, or at least have a passion for, and write about that. You don't have to love EVERYthing about it, but if there's no love there it'll show in your writing.

My wife 'inspired' me. I have a mind that craves activity. My career kept me constantly engaged, but with being recently retired I must now seek my own diversions. As a soldier, being faced with cold, wet winter weather was just another day. Now I view those conditions differently. I believe my wife became tired of me pacing the floor when the weather was bad; writing puts me in one spot for hours at a time.
