Amy B. Bellamy I was in college when I first heard about the last public hanging in the U.S., which happened in my town in 1936. I was fascinated by the story, especially when I learned a female sheriff had been in charge, and that thousands of reporters and curiosity-seekers had descended on our town to watch the events unfold. Truth really is stranger than fiction, and the more I learned about the actual historical events, the more firmly I believed it had the makings of a great novel. I toyed around with the idea for years and spent hours reading and researching old newspaper accounts about the circumstances involved in the crime, the trial, and the execution before finally taking the plunge to start writing the novel.
Amy B. Bellamy Write, write, write! I always write with the assumption that no one is going to read what I write except for maybe my mom. :) This takes the pressure off and allows me to just WRITE. As with so many things in life, the hardest part is definitely getting started. An author once told me to just write, even if it's crap. 10 pages of crap is better than not starting at all. Everything you write (even the crappy stuff) helps you improve your craft and find your voice.
