I've learnt a lot whilst writing my books. One of the most surprising has been how characters really do take on lives of their own. I'd read and heard about this from other authors but was unconvinced until I realised some of my characters had more of a part to play than I'd expected when I started each novel.
The most striking example is that I thought my first novel 'After The Funeral' was a standalone. When I found myself wondering about what happened to the characters months after finishing writing it, I realised I had a sequel to write. So 'A Question of Loyalty' was born.

I visited a distant relative who lived some distance away once when I was around 14. I was chilled by an entry in an old black leather family Bible which referred to a nineteenth century female ancestor who 'killed her dauter'. It was an intriguing and tragic entry, and I had so many questions, including the obvious ones: 'Was it true?' and 'Why?' As I learnt more about infanticide as I grew older, I wondered whether socio-economic pressures might have led the mother to kill her (possibly illegitimate) baby daughter out of desperation. Or could a malicious relative have recorded the entry? Who knows??
