Stephen Hall So far, that hasn't been much of an issue for me (touch wood!)
The best advice I ever heard on this subject was to just write something - ANYTHING.
Even if what you are writing has nothing to do with what you're meant to be writing, just the process of actually doing it will often unclog the blockage, and you'll find yourself circling back to the task at hand.
Stephen Hall I'm a sucker for the excitement of following this mysterious thing called creativity, and seeing where it takes us. For me, writing is an always-intriguing blend of wild imagination, intricate pattern-making, and logical - almost mathematical - problem creating and solving.
That, and creating an entire universe and playing god with the lives of its inhabitants - mwoohahahaha!
Stephen Hall My next book is a really weird fiction/non-fiction hybrid.
It’s part comedy scrapbook, part earnest motivational treatise. I may be biting off more than I can chew, and the whole thing may be a bit hard to pull off successfully, but I do know two things;
1. I’m really excited by it, and am loving working on it, and
2. There will be a LOT of gags in it....
Stephen Hall WRITE! The more you write, the better you get.
READ! The more you read, the better you get.
And then...
EDIT! The more you edit, the better your writing gets.
Stephen Hall I really ENJOY writing - it’s great fun for me. And if the project is one I’m excited about, I can’t wait to return to that playground, to keep making life-and-death decisions for the characters, to excite, amuse and hopefully surprise the reader.... and often to surprise myself! And by the way, that’s also my rule of thumb for deciding whether a writing project is worth pursuing; if I’m NOT excited by it, off it goes into the bottom drawer.... (maybe I’ll be able to salvage something from it later).
Stephen Hall The idea of an adventure set on a luxury space liner had been with me for decades. It was only in early 2019 that I started fleshing out the basic defending-territory-from-invaders story, and developing the protagonist and antagonist. And once I set myself the goal of writing a chapter a week for 52 weeks and publishing them online as I wrote them.... well, necessity very much became the mother of invention!
