Hello Gary!! So sorry to be slow in responding.... I'm not really accustomed to messages in Good Reads (although I'd love more!). I found some really good documents regarding TB in England - somewhat similar to the experiences my mother had in the Midwest in 1947. It's amazing what our parents survived. Back then the 'cures' were pretty draconian. Thank you so much for reading my novel ~ the best part is connecting with others around the stories. I hope you have a wonderful holiday ~~
Kind Regards,
Susan

When at the age of 46, I discovered I'd been adopted at 7 months olds - my sense of self was dealt a blow. In the nights thereafter, as a way to get some sleep, and as a way to understand my mother and birth mother, I began to imagine a story about two sisters - Eliza and Shannon. I explored their coming of age as young women in the 1940's, struggling against generational traumas, illness, secrecy and shame - as a way to better understand the choices my 'mothers' made in order to cope with life's challenges. The story itself took me other themes, such as the women's movement in mid-century America, post-traumatic-stress, and the very definition of family.

Leading a full life inspires me to write. I work full time in the Craft Brewing Industry, love to travel and visit old friends. By putting myself in new and sometimes challenging situations, I discover all sorts of human dilemmas and emotions that warrant exploration!

My book launch is sucking most of the oxygen from the room right now. However, my writing partner and I recently launched HotFlashFiction.com - an online monthly literary magazine for, by, and about women-of-a-certain-age. I'm also framing out a women's thriller novel from a previously written screenplay and a sequel novel to A Thread So Fine - about characters Miriam and Nell. Whichever of those two feels more compelling by year's end is the one I'll focus on in 2020.

Don't aspire...be! Okay, not to be glib - the best medicine is to actually write--even if it is only in your mind. Better if it's written down! Secondly, listen to your critics if you must - but believe those who encourage you.

To me, being a writer is the one thing about me that is core to my very self. I look at the world through imaginary scenes blending into actual ones and often work through my challenges by creating a dialogue with myself and others as if we were characters in a great story.

I take a long walk with my husband and talk through a scene or a character that is bogging me down. I have fairly regular road trips that are over an hour long, and I love the freedom to think deeply during this time, without even the pressure of writing things down. Long drives tend to really loosen my creative constraints!
