"As a girl, I listened to my mother’s stories about her year in quarantine as a 19-year-old TB patient in St. Paul in the mid-1940s. As an adult, upon my mother’s death, I discovered for the first time I'd been adopted at seven months old. So sorry to be slow in responding.... I'm not really accustomed to messages in Good Reads (although I'd love more!). I found some really good documents regarding TB in England - somewhat similar to the experiences my mother had in the Midwest in 1947. It's amazing what our parents survived. The Inspiration Behind A Thread So Fine

At forty-six years old and settled in my life with a wonderful husband, two young boys, and a comfortable career, I had a perfectly acceptable story I’d forever told myself about my childhood. Most of us do, I suppose. The night my brother invited me to dinner and revealed in his deadpan way the family secret he and my parents had kept for decades, my own personal narrative unraveled before even t Read more of this blog post »
