Gregg Norman The mystery of the ever expanding waistline.
Gregg Norman As Robertson Davies said, "I don't get ideas, they get me." When an idea creeps into my head and takes root I have no alternative but to try to write about it.
Gregg Norman Reading a well-written novel helps, but inspiration mostly arrives when it gets here and its arrival is not always timely or reliable. I wait for my Muse to visit and then I get busy and try to make the most of it.
Gregg Norman I deal with it the same way I deal with a sudden urge to do a lot of physical labor - lie down and wait until it goes away. That may sound facetious but it's not meant to be. I believe that the biggest cause of writer's block (and many other ills that beset us) is stress. So relax, put your feet up, and don't sweat the small stuff (sorry about the cliches). Just let your mind take over. If that doesn't do the trick, re-read a favorite novel, one that you love and that inspires you. Also, get as much sleep as you can. Dreams can be very productive.
Gregg Norman Two things - first, having the time to write. A writer's greatest luxury is time - unstructured time to let the mind wander and the words and sentences and paragraphs come together. Be selfish about your writing time; guard it jealously. It is pure gold. Second, having a serious reader (who is not just blowing smoke) say, "Gee, I really liked your book."
Gregg Norman Write SOMETHING every day, even if it's just a short journal entry. Be disciplined about this. The world is full of literate, articulate people capable of writing very well, but few of them create readable books because they lack the desire, the will, and the discipline to sit at the table and put words on paper or on a screen every day. Read anything and everything, not just classics and bestsellers. Be eclectic in your choices. Try to learn from the books you like best what it is that makes them enjoyable.
Gregg Norman A literary western. Yep, always wanted to write about cowboys and the old west (but with a twist - several twists actually).
