I have a writing buddy in Australia. If I hit a snag, I ask him for a prompt. We’ve exchanged our writing for 4 years, so I trust his suggestions, and we think so differently that a prompt from him always helps me out of a slump.

Finding the right word, the perfect word, the perfect image or metaphor that will express what I feel or think or believe.

Write like a lover, then revise like an assassin. NO ONE’s first draft is perfect. Make what you’re working on as good as you can make it, and then find a group or a writing buddy online or in person to help you see where to revise. The hardest thing to do is to listen to what these people say with an open mind. But remember, you’ve made it the best you can before asking for help, so anything they add will make it even better.

I had been writing poetry for about 4 years, and finally started sorting and putting poems on the same theme together. I saw that I had the makings of a book of poetry that would be a retrospective of a woman’s life. I got a manuscript together, and I had some good reviews from a manuscript workshop at a conference sponsored by Stockton University. Then I looked for a publisher, found Kelsay Books, and a year later, I had a book published.
