"Wait, no, that doesn't make any sense," she said. "How could he be dead when he's standing right there?"

Well, the book I just published is really a collection of poems I've written branching from 2014 to 2019, and I decided to finally create a poetry collection. It had to be done, I guess.

I watch a lot of drama and horror shows, so that gives me a good handle on emotional content. I write a lot about nature. Some of my best poetry is written when I'm in the car, or drinking my morning coffee. Sometimes a phrase comes to me during a lecture or while I'm out with friends. Regardless of when the random thought comes, I write it down in the little notes app on my phone and look at it later. That notes app does quite a bit of heavy lifting. Also, other books, music, YouTubers, Instagram, Pinterest . . . I consume quite a bit of media and consider the vast majority of it inspirational content.

A small, memoir-like book entitled "the garden boy." It's emotionally wrenching, but I'm terribly excited because I get to include facts about plants and quotes from people I love! It should be out sometime in January 2020 . . .

Just start! And don't expect yourself to write a fully-fledged novel in 24 hours. Every day, I carve out 30 minutes in the morning where I sit down at the computer or with a notebook. I play thunderstorm sounds (yes, it helps the process) and force myself to sit for that 30 minute block. I don't make myself sit for longer if I don't write what I expected, but I also don't stay longer even if the writing IS good. I leave it at the 30 minute mark until the next day. Primarily because I don't have time to sit and write all day (still a student), but because I would exhaust myself and have nothing good the next morning if I let myself ramble all the good stuff in one day.

I don't know, it's pretty cool to have an idea in your head and see it through to a finished product. That's amazing. And then everything that comes before, during, and after that is great too. I think, because I've wanted to do this since I was super young, I have fun now calling myself an author. Because it's my dream.

Usually I have several working projects at once, so if I'm having brain block issues with one, I go to one of the others! Because I'm a student, I actually use writing to procrastinate my studies . . . but hey, at least I'm productive on some avenue, right?
