I've had the universe thought up for a long time, much longer than I had the idea for Hand of Steel. I came up with Hand of Steel while reading Cinder. A cyborg girl was an interesting idea, so that's where Krys was born, and her story developed from there.

Finish things. The biggest issue I see with aspiring writers is they write three chapters of a story, get bored with it, and then write something else. They never even finish a rough draft.
For those who do finish things, I suggest learning the craft. Follow some blogs, read some books on writing, get your writing critiqued.
