Dane Barrett I thought I'd left my trousers in the wardrobe, and so dragged myself to the door with all the upper body strength I could muster. On opening it, I discovered I'd left my legs in there as well!
Dane Barrett I'd travel to the world of Star Wars and tell the imperials to protect their Death Star exhaust port. Then they'd shower me with wealth and power and I'd have more time to dedicate to writing :D
Dane Barrett I will be re-reading some old Fighting Fantasy gamebooks soon, but I have a long line of other interactive fiction yet to get through too. Zero to Hero by Mark Lain, a few older Dave Morris and Oliver Johnson titles I never got to read when I was younger, and not to forget I still need to read Jonathan Green's Neverland: Here be Monsters. I just picked up a new book called Nightshift by Victoria Hancox, which I'll likely check out right after receiving it.
Dane Barrett Write something; anything. I once wrote a selection of silly tales based on ghosts, and a couple of those actually made it into my first book (for the character of 'Rusty' Pembroke). Writing such things can really help with inspiration. Also make sure you read a lot, and don't be afraid to watch your favourite Netflix shows now and again. Inspiration can come from other creators when you're out of ideas.
Dane Barrett The most enjoyable aspect of writing is telling a story in a fun way. I prefer interactivity so that the reader isn't just a passive spectator.
Dane Barrett The most useful advice I've received from other writers is simply "just do it!" Its amazing how the story flows out of you if you just write, instead of thinking of reasons not to.
Dane Barrett I'm currently writing a gamebook adaptation/homage of Bram Stoker's Dracula, although I've taken quite a few liberties with the plot to add in new routes and puzzles. Dracula was a book that made a huge impact on my literary background, and I'm hoping to create something that might spark younger readers into being interested in older novels, hopefully eventually leading them to read the original Dracula.
Dane Barrett I had a full-time job requiring me to travel up to 5-6 hours a day so I never really had the time or the energy to write other than a few notes each week. When I was made redundant from my job I decided to follow my dream of being a writer and threw all my time into writing a gamebook, and Children of the Painted Apple was the result of that.
Dane Barrett Children of the Painted Apple was a story I came up with ten or more years ago, mentally compiled from my love of comic book heroes, science fiction, and my caring for the environment. I'd also wanted to design a gamebook/interactive fiction novel for many years, having grown up with them in the 1980s.
