Samira Mahmoodi I'm experiencing this now with the first novel I'm currently writing. I remind myself why I pursued writing: to have a voice about my experiences. If I'm experiencing writer's block, for me it's a sign that I'm not feeling inspired...and that's completely ok! I always hear how frustrating writer's block is, but I think because of how self-critical most of us are, we don't realize that it's completely natural. In life, there are times where we are "idle", and it's important to use this time to divulge into other things. You cannot force inspiration or creativity. It has to come naturally, and if it doesn't, it WILL reflect in your work! I just remain patient because I know that it's temporary.
Samira Mahmoodi It's something I truly love. Writing creates a particular freedom I don't always experience in my everyday life. It gives me the confidence to have my own voice. To create my own stories. It empowers me because it is a creative outlet I can truly be myself in.
Samira Mahmoodi Good question! I'm still so new to the writing world. I would say be authentically you, don't be afraid to write about your experiences, and to always make sure you are writing for the right reasons, being that writing is truly YOUR passion. It makes all the difference! Also decide from the beginning if you want to be self-published or not. This sets the tone for your creative control and marketing. Either way, be prepared to put in the work. Writing is not a cookie-cutter industry, so there is no "one-way" to be successful in it.
Samira Mahmoodi I'm working on my second poetry book, which is sort of sequel to 'To Water Her Garden'. I'm also working on my first novel. My website is being made as we speak. Follow me on Instagram @themira for the latest updates!
Samira Mahmoodi Personal experiences. Current events. People or situations I come across in my everyday life. For example, I can read something online that'll make me pause and reflect. I'll write about that reflection. Or I use that same reflection to write about something completely unrelated. It's very hard for me to write about something that doesn't come from a place of resonation. I think that's inauthentic and defeats the purpose of why I choose to write.
Samira Mahmoodi From being depressed after graduating college. My book was not originally intended or written to be a book. It started out as a notebook I used to journal during my college years. When my first therapist announced her retirement, I began reflecting on my journey and came across that same notebook and thought, "I want to make this into a book." And the rest is history.
