Lisa Krok While serving on the Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers committee for two years, I noticed that the main reasons teens/tweens may be reluctant readers is because they have not yet been matched with the right book and have not seen themselves in books. Novels in verse have more white space, fewer words per page in varying font/layout, and a rhythmic voice that draws the reader in. Using Rudine Sims Bishop's (1990) Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors, I searched to find novels in verse that provided representation for many different demographics, interests, and needs. Pairing the books with poetry activities was a natural progression to further engage the reader.
