Lisa Krok, MLIS, MEd, is a library manager in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and a former teacher. Her passion is reaching marginalized teens and reluctant readers through young adult literature. Lisa served on the Best Fiction for Young Adults 2021 committee and the Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers committee in 2018 and 2019. She also has words in School Library Journal, Kirkus, and Teen Librarian Toolbox.

Novels in verse have more white space, fewer words per page in varying font/layout, and a rhythmic voice that draws the reader in. Using Rudine Sims Bishop's (1990) Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors, I searched to find novels in verse that provided representation for many different demographics, interests, and needs. Pairing the books with poetry activities was a natural progression to further engage the reader.(less)
