Usually, music! I have ADD and my mind is never, ever standing still. This has made me into an unstoppable imagination machine, which can be problematic at times. However, when I need a little inspiration and have the time to dream, I go looking for new music. Many times, an amazing soundtrack will be the catalyst to moving scenes that will play out in my head, and grant me new ideas or motivation to keep writing!

The drive and motivation for the character of Weaver in this book came from my relationship with the boy I have mentored for the past six years. I wanted to make a protagonist who displayed the simple, but deep feelings of a child and the difference someone of character can make in their life.
As far as the unique magic system, I've become rather bored with the way magic seems to work in practically EVERY fantasy world: enchanted items, alchemy, spells; in general, anyone can learn or begin to practice magic.
I wanted to tie the arcane to genetics. Just as my genes dictate that I will never be a pro-athlete or sing like an angel, so too in this world the blood running through one's veins dictates magical ability. This hopefully makes for interesting reading (at least I think so) because each character must work with what they've got: the same as any of us.
