The simplest advice to aspiring writers is to write. And when you are not writing, read. When you are not writing or reading, listen to how people talk and observe what they do. You never know what details will help your story when you do sit down to write.

Years ago I was preparing to speak to a large group of college journalism students at Florida International University. I asked my son, who was about 12, what I should tell the students about journalism. Should I talk about how to do an interview? How to develop sources? What about the ethics of journalism? "No," he said, emphatically, "Just tell stories!" And that's what I did in my book, Finding the News.

The main "block" I've always faced is just getting to the chair. The excuses are many, varied and evolving. Once I sit down in front of a keyboard, or with a notebook, I usually find plenty of words. Writing is just like painting the house or cutting the lawn. If you don't start, it won't get done.
