I have been a journalist and author for 40 years, starting as a night police reporter in Chicago. I moved to El Paso, Texas, and covered the border with Mexico. Then I opened a bureau in Mexico City to cover all of Latin America for five years during the 1980s. I covered the Pentagon for five years, including the U.S. invasion of Panama, the first Gulf War and the intervention in Somalia. I was the Washington bureau chief for the E.W.
