This is actually something I plan to include in a story. I once opened the door to an old lady who insisted that my house was the key-cutter's shop. It wasn't until she turned away muttering that I noticed that the back of her coat and headscarf were covered in matted layers of cobwebs that looked as if they'd built up over years.

I don't wait for inspiration. I just write.

My debut novel is due for publication autumn 2019, so I'm working on the next book in that series - a futuristic fantasy for an 11+ readership.

1. Write. Simple really. Get it down on paper or keyboard. You can edit a bad first draft, but you can't do anything with a blank page (other than fill it).
2. Trust your gut (and your imagination.) Remember that advice, however well informed, is always part opinion.
3. Enjoy it.

Take a break, maybe to do something mundane like the washing up or getting a cup of tea. By the time I return to my keyboard or pad and pen, I'll know what to write next.

I’ve always read a wide range of genres, but the one that draws me in time and again is a fantasy tale set in the here and now or in a recognisable version of our own world, just like my book, Haven Wakes. The inspiration for the story itself came from all kind of places:
• a travelling salesman who first turned up in a story I wrote decades ago,
• the developing culture of robots and how they might affect the way we live,
• the question, 'are magic and super powers really that different?'
• the many colourful and, to a child a least, magical characters I grew up around.
