Ron Thomas On May31st 1942 Japanese submarines surfaced off Sydney's eastern suburbs and began lobbing shells on the coastline. I was almost two ears old and remember nothing of the actual shelling but it is my first and only memory of WW2. I lived at Punchbowl, some twenty kilometers inland and became aware of my mother's extreme agitation when she discussed the attack with my father.
'Should we be sending the children away to somewhere safer?' she asked. I'm 81 now and can still recall that day with surprising clarity.
The attack did little damage and many of the shells fell in a cemetery but the story is a series of mysteries, conundrums and paradoxes that have been written about without complete resolution.
Ron Thomas Somewhere South of Capricorn, a story of survival in the great depression.
Ron Thomas From a wartime Belgian refugee's seven page memoir
Ron Thomas My next book is Souvenirs. It should be available in January 2020
