He considers himself fortunate that his first career, in the hi-tech business world, entailed visits to many countries and exposed him to a variety of cultures and sparked a fascination with the histories that created them. His travels spawned the urge to write and contribute settings for much of his work. His travels spawned the urge to write and contribute settings for much of his work. He retired from the position he had held for more than 20 years as Managing Director of Anitech, a successful Australian technology company, to find out if he could forge a writing career.
Ron’s writing is of ordinary people faced with extraordinary challenges. His stories are usually set amid real, historical places and events and his sub-plots are often based on his own interesting journey. Ron is a man with a passion for all things Australian and the events and people that changed the country from a penal colony into today’s diverse culture. His first writing project was the lyrics for a musical, Ballaarat, based on the events at the Eureka Stockade, followed by an Australian trilogy based on Solly, a nineteenth century swagman. Since then, his stories have led his readers to the blitz, Angkor Wat, the Maori wars, the chaos of post war Japan and Darlinghurst amid the razor gang wars. Variety indeed!
These days, much of his time is spent writing and researching suitable subjects for present and future stories. Ron’s insatiable passion for stories drives him. He says that his writing technique is simple. He finds an interesting time and place in history and asks himself ‘what was it like to be there’. Then he takes his readers there.
Ron is a also keen and regular participant in various sports including cycling, tennis, golf, surfing and swimming. He is particularly proud of his ‘bucket list’ cycling medals won at the 2011 Adelaide Masters Games. His many and varied other interests include music and snorkelling in and around Manly and occasionally, between books, he paints landscapes for relaxation.
But above all his greatest interest is his family, His wife Margaret, three daughters and two granddaughters keep him on his toes!
Ron resides in Fairlight, in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney which he describes as God’s country, and spends time whenever he can at the family holiday house at Narrawallee on the beautiful south coast of NSW.
