As a wildlife journalist and photojournalist, I was photographing mountain goats in Montana's Glacier National Park. I big gust of wind came up and knocked my tripod, camera and telephoto lens to the ground, causing $700 damage and the worst part is that other people saw it happen.

I love watching children as they excitedly crack open my book for the first time. Nothing beats seeing a child deeply absorbed in the book I wrote and photographed. I just wish I had book like mine when I was a kid!

I don't allow writer's block to take hold. I try hard to not be a perfectionist. When I'm feeling uninspired and I'm facing a deadline, I force myself to sit down and begin writing. Though the words may not be the best or brightest, I know I can go back later to edit and rewrite. The important thing is to get something written. My final piece rarely resembles the words I first wrote, so just get busy with your keyboard or pen and get that first draft rolling. I find deadlines motivate me. Try setting a deadline for yourself and you might find yourself overcoming writer's block. Plus, if you write about something you love and know well, writer's block won't likely rear its time consuming head.

Write about something you love and know well. In my life, I present live owl programs with my wife Marcia. We introduce thousands of people a year (many of them students) to their wild owl "neighbors". So it was a natural fit for me to write an owl book for kids. I'm also a wildlife photojournalist so I illustrated my book with owl photos I made over the last 30 plus years. If you can write and illustrate your book with high quality photos or artwork, you'll have a definite edge in getting a publisher interested in your book.
