I'm always inspired to write, since I was a kid. For years I focused on my news writing/editing, writing novels on and off, mostly off. But the spark to write fiction has always been there, and I finally decided to prioritize that. Now I get up every day at 4, make a big pot of coffee, and write till 7. Then I take my wife coffee, with gratitude for her support. I'm very lucky to have a wonderful wife and a great day job -- and now to do this regularly.

Being creative is great, but you also have to understand construction, so never stop learning. Right brain and left brain work together, so feed them. Discipline yourself; make time to do it that doesn't mess with your family.

Writing is fulfilling. It's my only creative outlet. And I can make a side business with it, which is a lovely benefit.

I don't experience writer's block. I slow down once in a while, think about where to go next. I have notes to reference as I go, so my conscious brain will consult those. But writing is a mostly unconscious act, and fingers are the unconscious mind's conduit. I learned long ago that if I start moving my fingers on the keyboard, they know what to do.

It was a sudden flash of an idea. I wanted to write something different, with a broad appeal, and the idea popped into my head -- warm, enjoyable entertainment, lots of action and dialogue in a exaggerated, comicy sort of way, featuring endearing characters we want to watch develop. I like to say the characters are caricatures of themselves. It all has a graphic feel to me, like a movie on the page.
