(view spoiler)[In Oct/Nov 1573 the Queen would have been 50 (1533-09-07). Switching newborns of the mothers involved seems a bit of a stretch, even for poetic license's sake? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Actually, the queen would have just turned 40 years old in 1573. As shown in the book, there were songs and stories circulated among the people claiming that she had delivered a secret child or two. This could have been mere gossip, but who knows? The story of Arthur Dudley is an interesting one. Plus, all of the quotes in my book from England's Albion, Nashe, Sanford and Peele, are all accurate. My personal belief is that it COULD be true, but we don't know for sure. Either HW was their son, or there was a concerted effort by writers to spread this rumor so that they could place him on the throne instead of having a Scottish Rome-loving king succeed. Hello and thanks for the question. Actually, Edward won at the jousting tournaments in 1571, 1581 and 1584. His biggest competition against Philip took place in 1581. For the sake of the novel, I adjusted and compressed events to keep it flowing. Just before turning 12, the Queen visited Castle Hedingham, and so all of these true events were combined for the sake of the storytelling. We do not know if any jousting took place at Hedingham, but similar events would have occurred.
