I started writing the first draft of To Astera, With Love in 2009. The idea came to me in a dream, but I didn't have a solid foundation. After a friend read the book and basically said "this ain't it, sis," I went back to the drawing board. In 2018, I had a brainstorming session with my mother-in-law, who wrote for Welcome Back, Kotter, back in the day. After several "what ifs," the bare bones for Astera formed.

For me, it's worldbuilding and the opportunity to tell stories of people on the margins - BIPOC and the LGBTQ community. Being that representation for people who are not typically represented in mainstream media.

Set a timer for 20 minutes and write about anything. It could be related to the story or not. Most of the time I go passed the timer and keep writing, but if there are times when all I have in me is ten minutes, I honor that and walk away knowing that I did write something.
