J.L. Rothstein I had a dream about the character Gabriel. I knew right away he would be a being from Heaven, but not an Angel. From there I felt like he would be married and that his wife would look for him and that not finding him would haunt them both.
J.L. Rothstein There are lots of things that inspire me, but I get a lot intriguing ideas when I listen to music, that brings something out in me. Watching a great film, reading a book that transports me someplace else in time, or the beach. I love the ocean.
J.L. Rothstein My first book Atonement was book one in a three book series so I am working on the second book, Hellbound. I hope to complete it by the Fall. There is nothing worse than going into the Holiday season with a stressful deadline looming over you.
J.L. Rothstein I am only just published, my first novel is out now. So far, it's the self-promotion that's been the most challenging. If you're expecting to write a book, publish it and see it be wildly successful, you are going to be disappointed. With the dawn of self-publishing most writers see their first book as promotional material, something to be given away. It's all building a brand, that can be tough to swallow. There is a lot to learn, so brace yourself to work just as hard after launch as you did to write it.
J.L. Rothstein Since I write fiction it would have to be that I get to create an entire new world. Even if I write something low fantasy, based on Earth, adding supernatural elements makes it an entirely new place. Getting to take these thoughts and images in my head and put them down on paper for people to read is very fun.
J.L. Rothstein I once heard another writer talk about writers block. I'm paraphrasing but he essentially said he doesn't believe it exists. That when you're stuck, you should understand that it's just your subconscious mind telling you that you've hit a dead end. You have gone down the wrong path in your story and to correct it you need to go backward until you find your way.

I know that's easier said than done, but I think there is something to it. Our minds are powerful and if we took our story to the wrong place, it may just stop us cold in order to force us to correct course.
