I mostly read non-fiction, but occasionally I read mysteries and true-crime. U.S. history is currently a focus of my reading. This summer, I hope to find time to read:
The Barbarous Years by Bernard Bailyn
These Truths: A History of the United States
Before the Revolution by Daniel Richter
The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World by Marie Favereau
The Great Darkness by Jim Kelly
We Keep Our Dead Close by Becky Cooper

An historic nor'easter roared into Marblehead MA in November 1950, lashing the town with ferocious rain, snow and winds that shut down electric power and forced residents to wait out the storm, without lights, and with frigid winds beating against their homes in the dark. After the storm, a frail 5th grade teacher was found alone, lying in her unlit kitchen dead in her own blood, with her throat savagely slashed; her only companion, a pet dog, was alive upstairs in a closet, and the murderer looked to have returned to the scene to clean up his crime, despite the storm raging outside.

Do your homework before writing, structure your book in a way people will easily follow, and present your writing clearly, honestly and with compassion for your subject and an understanding of your audience.

I have always liked to master complicated fact patterns and attempt to write clear summaries of what I have found in my research. Basically, I like to give people an understanding of subjects in a clear, logical and honest way. Communication has always been important to me, and as I've gotten older, writing has scratched that itch and become enjoyable for me. Luckily, I've had some encouragement from relatives, friends and business associates to continue writing.

I was 12 years old in October 1961 when Joan Risch disappeared from her home in Lincoln, MA. My home in 1961 was in Arlington MA, two towns to the east of Lincoln. My father, mother and I would occasionally visit an uncle in Concord, MA, and when driving back home one day on Route 2A, we passed Old Bedford Road. My father pointed out the road to my mother and told her that it was the road that Joan Risch lived on. For reasons I don't understand, his comment stayed in the back of my mind until I retired in 2015 (54 years later). At that point I decided to research Joan's case and write a book about her disappearance.
