I volunteer at a children's hospital and work with a lot of siblings of patients. One day, I was headed downstairs to a family event and saw a teenage boy ahead of me carrying his little sister's backpack. His sister had special needs and had taken the elevator with her mother. When they met him at the base of the stairs, the idea struck as I took another step down: I should write a story about siblings!

I tend to feel like writing when I'm busy with other work I need to do. Of course, right? The trick is to follow the whim, put aside what's urgent and work on the important thing. I'm fortunate to do this since I don't have set hours, although I do have deadlines. If I can't get to it, I'll make notes or email an idea to myself.

I'm a painter by day, so I tend to have a few projects in the works. I didn't expect to feel like writing after I finished as I never expected to write in the first place. However, I have felt a story brewing. Not quite ready to share, but besides that, a short-story popped into my mind that was also unexpected. It's a cute poem about one of the main characters, Pipsy Lee, and an unexpected friendship. It's called Pipsy Lee and the Unhairy Gucky Loat. (If ya read my book, you'll get it!)

Just write and don't worry about what form it will take, how many words or pages, or who might read it. I always thought of mine as a story I was writing; not until I was nearly finished did I dare to call it a book.

When I was writing my book, I had no expectations. I'd take my hand-written pages to a coffee shop or my favorite writing place and re-read a few pages. Usually ideas would spring to mind as I was editing and reading. It felt like driving on a winding road and suddenly seeing a new turn. What if this happened...
Curious to explore, I'd take off, fully aware that what I was writing may not even be part of the story, but that I could worry about that later.
