My latest book came from the year I joined the Department of Defense Dependents Schools and went to Taegu, Korea to teach military children. Many of the places and things in the book are actually real places and events from that year. I just created a character with a greater story to tell than mine at the time.

A bit like my mom who would out of the blue start telling one of her stories about being in the French Underground, I can be doing some everyday thing and poof a character or story idea pops into my head. For example, I decided as an older adult that I should have short hair instead of long, so I went to the beauty shop and had it all chopped off. In the shower that night, I thought, "Well, from the back, you'd probably think I was a boy." From that I created a character in the late 1880s who chopped off her hair and wrote the story of her entire adult life---just because I cut my hair.

Let the ideas flow freely. You can always go back and tweak whatever didn't work, so let the magic flow.

The best thing about being a writer is sharing these characters and stories that a floating in my mind with others. I also hope that some of my works actually make a difference in someone's life.

I get a cup of my favorite tea, take a sip and close my eyes so my brain can focus on the delicious flavors and let my mind go from there.
