I start writing in the time when I am most busy, or when I am out and start writing on my phone. The feeling that I will probably just write for 5 minutes makes it easy. And then I forget what I was supposed to do and write....

When we emigrated from communist Czechoslovakia in 1986, we were sentenced in absence to 5 years in prison for illegal emigration. We got political asylum in the UK in 1987 we were very careful with correspondence. We never put return address on any letters, neither did our friends and family. Yet, despite moving from West Germany to the UK and then moving 4x in the UK, we had a letter from Ministry of Justice from Czechoslovakia in summer 1988 addressed to our newest UK address telling us that there has been an amnesty and we no longer have to go to prison if we return to Czechoslovakia. The communist regime ended in November 1989. But it was scary and puzzling, how could they know our address.

Yes, I loved the summit, and let's hope by connecting here, we can support each other. The way I set the group allows everybody to write about their book once a week. I never opened a Goodreads group before so not sure what I am doing yet!

My newest book, written in English is a family saga about 3 generations of partly Jewish, partly Caribbean family. It is about identity, emigration, racism. It's also about a difficult mother-daughter relationship. All topics which touch my life. I used my family stories, fictionalised, and although the main character is not me, she is close to what I am, in her life, thinking, emotions. Writing the book made me come to terms with my family Holocaust history and with my relationship with my mother. The book " WHY DIDN'T THEY LEAVE?" will be published in September 21.

Writing is like living a second paralel life, life of my characters. It is fun, it makes me think , and as all books are autobiographical ( remember Flaubert- "Madame Bovary, c'est moi") writing helps me to solve problems in my life.
