Amy C. Martin I haven't found anything that I stick to, but the best advice I've heard is to write through it. If you're blocked on a certain part of your story, move to another part, move to another story, work on something in a different genre or format altogether. If nothing else, do some journaling or write a critique of someone else's work. Something that often works for me is participating in word sprints - for some reason I get competitive knowing that I need to have a solid number at the end of ten or twenty minutes.
Amy C. Martin I really enjoy that being a writer means I get to interact with a variety of subjects and styles. I can write fiction, non-fiction, I can learn to write in different genres or about different themes. It's such a versatile skill that is applicable to so many areas of life.
Amy C. Martin It is advice I have trouble following myself, and I hear it over and over again, but the best thing you can do if you are a writer is to write. I have a million reasons every day to put off writing until tomorrow, but writing should be higher on my list of priorities. Practice writing for its own sake, write down the ideas that chase themselves around your head- make time for it in your day to day, and writing becomes its own reward.
Amy C. Martin I have a series of novellas in the works, and I'm always working on a handful of short stories. It's interesting to work on a variety of projects to keep you engaged with the process of writing. I also recently got involved in a short story contest, and I'm writing a series of drabbles that are exploring an evolving story between the two main characters.
Amy C. Martin I get inspiration from a lot of places! I get a lot of ideas from songs and TV shows. My favorite type of inspiration is when I hear or use a phrase or expression that is common and mull it over, trying to twist it in my head to be examined from a different angle.
Amy C. Martin The idea for 'All Will Be Well' came when I was researching the original history of the Mayflower voyage, and found it didn't quite line up with what I'd been taught in school. I wrote the book primarily to show the discrepancies between the historical events and the myths we hear around Thanksgiving.
