I like to try to apply common themes or mundane characters to future situations. It's always a mental exercise to imagine what types of challenges they may face that are similar or different than we do. Technology, setting and social structure may change, but human nature doesn't.
When world building for a space based story, it's important to me to not borrow too much from any other "world", or if I do, I try to come at it from a different angle so as to make it unique. It tends to be groan-worthy to read a book that uses common technologies throughout the genre: "warp" or other faster-than-light travel technology, alien invasion, clear cut protagonists/antagonists, etc.

I go for a hike alone so that I can hear myself think. Working at home with two small children, who are currently homeschooled, is distracting at the best of times.
If that's not an option, I often chat with my father, who is also a writer. We have similar thought processes when coming up with ideas, so it's productive to have a good brainstorming session with him.
