Steve Gay I don't find that I need much in the way of inspiration - my mind is always restless, and strange notions arrive easily enough. It is not what to put on a blank page that is difficult, but how to shape the story so that it builds and twists and punches as it needs to.
Steve Gay I saw a photograph of my father when he was a boy, sitting on a concrete elephant just as the war was beginning, and began to talk to him about that time, the way the neighbourhood responded to the outbreak of war, the social tensions, the pressures and expectations that weighed on a young mind. He described the Luftwaffe bombers flying over our town in the moonlight on their way to bomb Coventry, and how the burning city glowed on the horizon - and from that image the story was born.
