James Case The idea for my debut novel came from having fallen down into the bottomless pit that is genealogy. Unearthing a string of demonstrable facts but not being able to reach back and find the underlying meaning of these facts or being able to connect them in a logical way. This left so many questions. So much speculation.

My writing allows me to build up the fictional meat on the bones of historical facts.
James Case I am inspired to write through creating sentences and paragraphs that I am personally very proud of. I read them back and they are lasting and evocative. It may take me three or four hours to write a single paragraph. I am fortunate enough to have that luxury. I won't stop editing in the immediate until I feel that the paragraph is utterly compelling for the reader. Then on to the next one. Each paragraph is a building block. The story should be as Vitruvius described the elements of a successful building: firmitas, utilitas et venustas.
James Case A sort-of sequel to Ananias. Again, told from the first person point of view (not for the faint of heart) but this time through his grandson, Vicory.

"Vicory" is also the working title.
James Case If you truly believe you are crafting literary works and have had feedback to confirm this, find a publisher that will further your work through quality editing, great artwork, a superb physical product and creative promotion.
James Case I'm not sure how to answer this as I became published in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. I don't feel like a writer yet, having practiced architecture for 40 years. I will be thrilled to finally be called a writer. Hasn't really happened yet!
James Case I find that the best way is to step away from the project you are struggling with. Write an article, prepare a post for your blog, craft a short story, then go back to novel writing. I guess it just means that you can get too close to it. This sort of break helps me clear my mind and sharpen my skills at the same time.
