J.L. Burns Write what you love. Don't worry about the hottest tropes or what's currently "in." By the time you finish, those things will change, so just worry about writing the story you want to read and it will find its audience.
J.L. Burns The Devil's Delight actually started as a "test" for a small company that hires ghostwriters and publishes their work under various pen names. Lucifer was "in" at the moment, so they just asked for a Lucifer romance with demons and such. We are massive history and mythology nerds but were still relatively new to writing as a business, so we tried to stay within the tropes they wanted, but it just wasn't good enough for the editor we were assigned. After the project was ultimately canceled, our good friend L.A. helped us buy the rights back, and luckily for us, the beta readers loved everything the editor thought we did wrong. Big bad Lucifer running a bakery in Boston? Who knew!
