I'm lucky to live in a place where I can go outside for a long walk just about any day of the year. Physical movement seems to help the creative process, I think by helping one look at the "block" from a different angle. Sometimes, you just have to walk away and let your preconscious work its magic!

This is tough to answer; a lot depends on how it's going each day. But, over all, I'd say the best thing is the feeling one gets of making something original that is also in its way beautiful or as perfect as you can make it. Over time, I've come to enjoy the process of re-writing, editing and polishing almost as much as that first spark of inspiration.

Not very novel, I'm afraid: set aside a time and place to write and do it every day. Practice makes perfect...or, at least, good.
I find it helpful to work off of a set of genre expectations (e.g., mystery/detective, sci-fi, romance, etc.) and see what twists and new angles I can bring to the genre. Hence, my first book's imitation of traditional folk- and fairy-tales...with differences.

Actually, I wanted to be a writer of poetry when I went to college but life (and the war) got in my way. After my 2nd career in marketing and development, I took up writing as an exercise to keep busy in retirement...it worked!

More Tales from the Crone's a sequel to my published suite of tales told by "the old one" from centuries ago and addressed to modern readers. I needed to complete her journey through time and space to our modern age and provide along the way more fables to consider.
