Joanne Spence After nearly ten years of leading therapeutic yoga groups in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, I realized the most powerful groups nearly all included the same gentle movements and breathing practices. They were very simple and effective. I had spend a lot of time, energy, and money in being able to teach groups in mental health settings. I felt if I could teach therapists the basics of gentle movement and a handful of breathing practices that it would help embody talk therapy and help create a shift in one's nervous system for therapists and their clients.
Joanne Spence I am inspired to write by a good cup of coffee, a beautiful vista, and other people writing.
Joanne Spence I am working on a card deck to support "Trauma-Informed Yoga: A Toolbox for Therapists: 47 Simple Practices to Calm, Balance, and Restore the Nervous System." The book is geared towards therapists. The card deck is geared towards people in therapy.
Joanne Spence Make a schedule and stick to it. For example, I get up at about the same time each day, I make my bed and get 'dressed' for work (even though I work at home). I continue on with my routine as if I were going to a job. Know yourself. I took Facebook off my phone for several months so I couldn't check it as soon as I got up. Instead, I was able to lean into the habit I was creating of writing for two hours before lunch (or whatever time period works for you). Then do it no matter what.
Joanne Spence What I like best about being a writer is managing my own schedule and understanding that thinking/daydreaming time is a huge part of my creative process.
Joanne Spence I usually clean something or go for a walk. That usually clears my head and allows me to continue on. Alternatively, I teach a yoga class. Teaching requires my full attention for a whole hour. Plus I get to move my body and notice my breath too. Doing any of these things puts me in a better headspace to write.
