I believe there is a story in everyone. It may be a simple thing, like a father's promise to help a friend (Paradise Acres) that simmers over many years, eventually turned in to a story by his daughter, or the mystery of a grandmother's unknown childhood (My Mary) which prompted her granddaughters, posthumously, to research her past. My advice is, if your writing is a memoir, to study the pivotal moments in your life and build on that, or write the story of someone else's life--you never know what you'll uncover.

My ancestors give me the inspiration. I like to write their stories as a way to pass down their heritage for future generations.

I write memories. Paradise Acres was written to immortalize my great uncle, Earl. My Mary is a story based on the life of my husband's grandmother who, as a Barnardo Home Child, immigrated to Canada at eleven years of age. My current work in progress is another Barnardo Home Child story, this one from my side of the family.

Don't put it off, make the time for it and just write. Of, if you're like me and older, it's never too late to start.

I have dabbled in writing my entire life, however, it's only been the past year that I have concentrated on completing and publishing my novel. I believe what I love most about being a writer is that is allows me an outlet to store my memories. When I read these pieces, even years later, I retain those memories as if they were fresh, similar to viewing a favourite photo, my loved ones and favourite places are with me again. That's what my writing does for me. And, while writing fiction, I weave bits and pieces of everyday memories into my work.
