Given that I once had to write the longest sentence, properly constructed, as part of the final exam in my undergraduate program and it had a minimum word count of several hundred words, I do think I could write a horror story in two sentences; the sentences, however, might be quite lengthy. Oh, you wanted me to actually DO it? ;-)

I've got a LONG list. I recently enjoyed "Robert Galbraith's" latest, Troubled Blood. It's interesting to see a story evolve over a year's time. Usually, mysteries are solved (in books, on tv shows, and movies) much more quickly so this one is more realistic as Robin and Cormoran unfold the secrets, relevant or not, of each character.

Writer's block. Two words that create great fear and trembling! I jot ideas regularly, but if I get truly stuck, I have to get into Matthew's world in my mind, which means escaping my own. For me to break through it, I have to break free. A few days at the beach doing nothing but soaking in the salt air, the sound of the waves crashing, and the ocean breezes will fix almost anything bothering me -- including writer's block.

I've been a writer, in one capacity or another, my whole career. Formerly, that was highly technical content to help developers use software and hardware tools. I was thrilled to let my imagination run wild and write in my own voice -- nothing conforming to a certain style guideline with lots of rules.

I'm currently working on the sequel in the Matthew Paine Mystery series to Dead Spots, tentatively titled Preferred Death. Matthew is back in his small town and encounters another murder of an interesting character, one who's not easily understood so finding a motive for that murder seems impossible, at least at first.

People intrigue me; how people relate to each other, how they interact with their surroundings, and how they solve simple problems. I suppose that's the catalyst for creating characters and having them grown and change in some meaningful way as they interact. Often, when I clear my mind of all of the daily things and get going, it all just flows.

The character, Matthew Paine, was born in my imagination as a bit of a tribute to my son and my brother. Neither of them are in the medical profession and neither live in the small town I chose as their residence, but some attributes of the Matthew character should be entirely familiar to both of them.
The opening scene with the naked woman splayed invitingly across the good doctor's examining table was just that -- a scene that came to mind -- and I knew I had to write about it.
