The ideas just come, and I have to sit down and get them out. If I'm already working on a project, I add a new idea to a file I keep that has all my ideas for stories. Sometimes I'll read an article, or hear of something happening in the world. Some of my projects are inspired by real life events.

The thing about being a writer is that ideas are constantly coming and being mulled over in my head, even if I'm not consciously aware of it. And any time I'm having trouble writing what feels write, I do a brainstorming session. Writing inspires writing, and I usually find jotting down ideas helps inspire whatever it is that I need to be writing at the time. If I need a break from writing, I'll read a book, watch a movie or binge a tv series, or take a walk.

The next project I'd like to work on is something in a genre I don't typically write in: action/adventure. This idea sprang from reading an article about 300-year-old pirate bones being discovered on the sea bed and brought up to test DNA against known descendants of who they think the pirate might be. Voila, an idea was born. And it turned into a trilogy! I'm SO EXCITED to get going on this project. Research has been underway for a few months. It has pirates, an ancient poet, it takes place in (mostly) Portugal, hidden treasure (in a way), a centuries-old family feud, long-buried secrets, hidden passageways, and all kinds of neat things. Think Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft meets the DaVinci Code meets Pirates of the Caribbean.

The best thing about being a writer is the freedom to write whatever I want, whenever I want (sort of!). I love being creative, coming up with new ideas, the research is fun. And in addition to my regular genres, I like to push my creative boundaries and explore other genres in writing, usually in flash fiction or micro fiction. With writing, the possibilities are endless.

I'm currently finishing up revisions for my latest work-in-progress, a domestic suspense/thriller. Then it's back to the query trenches!
