Hazel Ward The idea for 'Being Netta Wilde' evolved from a story I wrote for a fiction writing course assignment. It was about a lonely and bitter woman whose family tell they her want a divorce in the middle of their favourite restaurant. I wrote a few more pieces about her during the course and by the end of it, the idea for my first novel had taken root.
Hazel Ward I'm working on the next book in the Netta Wilde series. It's called 'Finding Edith Pinsent'. In 'Being Netta Wilde', Edith, or Edie as she's affectionately known, is already dead and we only get to know bits about her from her diary entries or the things that other people tell Netta about her. In this book, Netta decides it's time to fulfil the promise she made to Edith's great-nephew when she bought the house and find out more about Edith Pinsent. Along the way, she also reconnects with other people from her own past.
Hazel Ward Interesting people inspire me. By interesting, I mean people who might seem quite ordinary on the surface but there's something about them that suggests they have a backstory that's worth exploring. When a character like that gets into my head, I have to work out what that story might be.
