Inspiration isn't always predictable for me, so I've learned to seize the moment when I have an idea. I plot and write snippets on my phone while riding on a plane, or I stop to write ideas down while on a horseback riding adventure. I'll note down some ideas before bed, or while I'm waiting for my children's school bus. Occasionally inspiration will strike during a very boring meeting-- I'll excuse myself to go to the bathroom, and then jot some story ideas. Anything it takes to get the ideas down!
When I do have an entire day to write (which is a rare, magical beast), I find that walks in the forest allow me to think creatively.

My uncle was a man of many talents. As I grew up, I watched him take on many jobs, and always with a smile on his face. One day, he announced that he'd become a funeral home assistant, and that his job was to help carry coffins to the graveyard and prepare them for burial. I was fascinated! He described one very unfortunate incident in which he and his friend dropped the casket in the middle of the night, and that got me thinking: what was it like to work in a graveyard after dark? What sorts of stories would you have to tell? This inspired the beginning of The Grave Thief.
