If you wait for inspiration, you might never get words on the page. Sometimes you just have to get the words down, so that you have something to play with and massage into the gold you ultimately share with the world.
That being said, there are plenty of things that spark interest in me, which I then mull over as inspiration for new writing. More often than not, it comes from speaking with others. Conversations that touch on hard topics, like death, dying, and grief, were what inspired my new book "Riding the Waves: A Memoir of Love, Loss, & Grief". I think people naturally want to learn and grow, and conversations that spark around intimate feelings that don't often own the spotlight make for great fodder. Just because we don't talk about it, doesn't mean those emotions don't exist. Writing them down and sharing them, helps people see themselves in stories, plus lets them know they aren't alone. If that's not great inspiration, I don't know what is!

It took a long time to finish Roughing it in Africa, but part way through the final draft, I started tapping away at a new book. I have written several short stories about the death of my husband, but have always known that a longer story needed to be told. I have started and stopped this grief memoir a few times, but the tale is still there. So many people have listened to my journey, asked advice from me about dealing with grief in their own lives, and nodded when I said this book has to happen.
So I am trying.
When will the story be done? Hard to say, but unless another story creeps in and tries to take over the reigns, my next book will be a grief memoir tentatively entitled Riding the Waves. Coming soon(ish).

Anyone can be a writer. We all have stories in us that only you can tell. The trick is making the time to put words on the page.
If you can't fit in daily writing sessions, pick a weekly date. Find you keep missing it? Join a writing group to add a hint of accountability to your process. And don't forget to read. Reading other's works helps you grow your own. You pick up vocabulary, grammar tips, and writing styles that you can either incorporate into your own style, or conversely, steer clear of.
Ultimately, just keep at it. It doesn't matter if it spills out of you in a day or takes years to percolate. The more you write, the better you get. I promise you.
