Jo Boyle Exercise. More specifically, walking. I felt that during CICATRICE, I had a lot of those moments of paralysis, and I often found that when I couldn't nut out a problem, walking had a way of clearing the mind and revealing a solution.
Jo Boyle I had a favourite TV character who was quite mysterious. Not a lot of her background was revealed, and she was hard to get through to emotionally. I found myself imagining what might've happened to her in her past; what events might have led to the wall's construction. And what might have to happen so that the wall would come down.
Jo Boyle Wow. The best thing about being a writer. Interestingly, I've heard it said so many times that you should "write what you know". And that makes perfect sense, surely. As a writer, you want to be authentic. And you don't want to sound like a clown! (Unless you're writing about clowns.) But I can tell you honestly, the most important - the most central of what CICATRICE is - had not been experienced by me, UNTIL I wrote it. For me, the writing BECAME the experience. So I guess the short answer to the question is: Writing gives hope. Hope that something so thoroughly felt and experienced in the imagination, may some day come to pass outside of it.
