I've written 2 books since The Mark of Amulii, and each one of those stories was inspired by friends. One of them is an artist, and I was looking at some of his characters and the story just clicked.
Another friend of mine told me a dream he had, and it sparked a muse.
As far as The Mark of Amulii, it was a dream I had 11 years ago, and somehow I managed to make it an entire (horribly-written) story that I put away for over a decade and rewrote last year.

To be honest, I'm not really sure. I just remembered being a kid that always liked to be by himself writing about something. Usually something to pull my mind far away from the real world.

A bunch of little short stories and a huge 170k high fantasy practice story. I probably won't do anything with it, but it taught me a lot.

Don't come into this game with grand expectations, but also, don't come into it defeated. Everything is going to work against you, including your own mind. Stay focused on your stories and always make an effort to improve. You will never write the perfect story, and that's okay. As long as you can look back at things you wrote and notice how much you've improved, you're one step closer to making it.
