Go for a walk. Good to get out of the house and in the fresh air ... let your mind wander a little.

Hello, S.E.
Sorry I missed this when you posted.
Yes, I did go to the Philly Conference this past summer. Enjoyed a great fiction intensive with Nancy Rue.
This coming summer, July 26 to 29 this year, I'll be on the faculty at the Philly Conference, teaching a seminar on "The Plot Skeleton."
Stay in touch. I'll try.

Tough one. In my reading, probably Marie Laure and Werner from "All the Light You Cannot See," by Anthony Doerr ... because I just finished reading it. They are not really a "couple", but their lives and stories intertwine in this wonderful book.
Cary Grant and Loretta Young in "The Bishop's Wife." Again, not really a "couple." But Grant is awesome as an angel.

I sit in my chair, in front of the computer, put the keyboard in my lap and start typing. I need to be present for the creativity to flow.

Write. There is no better training ground for writing than writing. If you can, get a job as a journalist, where they pay you to write. It's a different kind of writing, but it teaches you discipline and deadlines.
Buy Stephen King's book, On Writing. A fascinating read, and a lot of good ideas.
Go to Writer's Conferences. If you want to learn how to improve your craft ... or you're starting out like I was in 2005 and wanted to know the right way to write a book, to learn the craft ... there is no better investment than Writer's Conferences. You can learn a huge amount in a short time, and make some lasting and important relationships.

Research. Kind of counter-intuitive, but as more of a plot-driven, rather than character-driven, author I like digging around and finding out stuff that I can use to build the tapestry of the adventure - and obscure is better. In the JERUSALEM PROPHECIES series, our guys travel from St. Anthony's Monastery in Egypt (the oldest, continuously in use monastery in the world), to the Krak de Chevaliers, a Crusader castle in Syria, to some 5,000-year-old passage tombs in Loughcrew, County Meath, Ireland. Who would know about that kind of stuff without doing research? That's the fun part.

JERUSALEM PROPHECIES #3
Tom Bohannon and his mismatched team of archaeologists and historians, reeling from the murder of two of its members, is one step ahead of an ancient gang of assassins and one step behind the deadline for impending disaster as it maneuvers through a maze of political treachery, religious fanaticism and traitorous machinations - to the very brink of judgment orchestrated by a force greater than they could have imagined.
