Traumatized by her early life experiences as a child immigrant who came to America all by herself, my mother never spoke of her German childhood. In 1990, we returned to her small home town where her family had lived for over 200 years. That's when I began to assemble the puzzle pieces of her life.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Fern Schumer Chapman A long time ago, I learned that the assumption that motivation results in productivity is wrong-headed. The truth: productivity results in motivation.

When I have writer's block, I do something to free my mind -- take a walk ride my bike, even drive the car. Then, when I return home, I start working again, angling into what I'm writing any way I can. Once I get started, usually, I can't stop.
