Fern Schumer Chapman Actually, I solve the mystery of mother's early life and family in my book MOTHERLAND. Traumatized by her early life experiences as a child immigrant who came to America all by herself, my mother never spoke of her German childhood. In 1990, we returned to her small home town where her family had lived for over 200 years. That's when I began to assemble the puzzle pieces of her life.
