Believe in yourself, and write the story only you can write. James Scott Bell expressed it beautifully when he said the key to originality is to write who you are. And as Robin McKinley has pointed out, we each only have one story to tell; its whether or not we find interesting ways to retell it that's important.

For me, writing is a release. It helps me to process emotions—even if what I'm writing about has nothing to do with whatever is bothering me in the background. And also, I'm an avid reader, but sometimes what I really want to read hasn't been written. So... I write it myself.

Music is usually involved. I have a writing playlist, and often a particular song will end up being emotionally tied to a particular scene, and I will play it on repeat as I work through the details.

My mother used to work for an experienced naturalist, named John Frost, who owned a nature-themed gift store. I loved visiting the shop, wandering among its limited-edition fine art nature prints, sonorous wind chimes, and delicate stained-glass rooters. At some point, I got inspired by the idea of Jack Frost as a character, and began to ask, "What if...?" Then the thought of the seasons as characters came along, and I began to write!
